Electron Microscopist (Full-Time - San, Diego)

Job description: 


Responsibilities include but are not limited to


- Develop project specific workflows to address clients’ goals and implement them in collaboration with other team members
- Reviewing scientific literature on samples to aid analyses and understanding of projects
- Electron microscopy data analysis and processing up to 3D reconstructions
- Model building and refinement 
- Writing comprehensive reports detailing the findings from image analysis and processing
- Present ongoing analyses and results to clients and respond to feedback

 Minimum experience

- PhD or analog in Structural Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Biology or a related area of life sciences
- A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in cryoEM analysis of biological molecules;
- Experience in single particle analysis and high resolution cryoEM structure determination
- Experience in model building and refinement
- Ability to maintain rigorous attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills
- Ability to work and communicate with colleagues at all levels;
- Ability to work on multiple challenging tasks in a rapidly paced environment

NanoImaging Services (NIS) is the leading provider of cryoEM and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) consultancy and services for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.  Our mission is to enable the power of cryoEM and TEM for every step in the process of novel and existing therapeutic development, from discovery to delivery,  through a differentiated service offering, making the method accessible and affordable for discovery teams at all stages of method adoption.


Our newly established and rapidly growing site in the Greater Boston area is currently seeking a Senior Microscopist / Microscope & Facility manager. Designed for discovery and with room to grow, this center houses 2 TFS Glacios instruments, a chameleon system from SPT Labtech for next-generation sample preparation, a Refeyn mass photometer, vitrobots, and extensive ancillary equipment to support target enablement and structure-based drug design for biotech and Pharma clients. 

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to

As senior microscopist:
- Electron microscopy data collection, analysis, and pre-processing (sample intake, sample preparation, grid preparation, grid screening and evaluation, setting up data collection, setting up data pre-processing). All steps need to be documented and reported following established protocols and using the internal database.
- Training, assisting and overseeing junior microscopists
- Training members of our partnerships program in sample preparation and data collection and processing


As Microscopes & Facility manager:

- Responsible for keeping the microscopes in the best possible working condition - checking on data quality/alignments when needed, interfacing and alerting Service engineers when there may be possible issues well ahead of time when possible, scheduling PMs, ensure the facility is stocked with various microscopy needs (LN2, Ethane, assorted grids etc)
- Proactively design and implement improvements in the workflow to improve speed, quality and reliability of data collection.
- Maintaining a very good relationship with the Service engineers and keeping organized with the NIS IT department to keep communication open and information on hand when needed
- Work closely with the Chief Scientist for microscopes time slot scheduling and management
- Providing operational support to the facility, including, but not limited to overseeing and maintaining all ancillary equipment (DH room, vitrification robots, analytical instruments, BSL2 cabinet, freezers etc), overseeing junior lab technicians, supporting laboratory organization, and ensuring compliance with documentation requirements.
- Planning and executing facility updates and addressing future needs


Minimum experience:

- A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in cryoEM analysis of biological molecules;
- Hands-on experience in operation of electron microscopes for image collection;
- Hands-on experience in operation of Vitrobot, manual plunger and/or other related equipment in biological electron microscopy;
- Experience in high resolution cryoEM;
- Hands-on experience in usage of cryoEM software for automated image collection;
- Hands-on experience in operation of Titan Krios, Glacios and Tecnai microscopes;
- Experience managing a lab/facility a plus;
- Skills in working and communicating with colleagues at all levels;
- Ability in working on multiple challenging tasks in a rapidly-paced environment

​​​Scientist - Image Analysis and Scientific Report Writing (Full Time - San Diego, CA)

NanoImaging Services, Inc. (NIS) is an industry leader providing structural analysis and characterization services of biopharmaceuticals using electron microscopy and advanced image processing to over 200 Pharma and Biotech companies globally. We currently house 2 K3-equipped Titan Krios microscopes, 2 Glacios microscopes and 1 Tecnai T12 microscope in San Diego and the Greater Boston area.

 

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented scientist interested in a dynamic commercial environment to join our talented team in San Diego, California.

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Evaluation and interpretation of images of samples acquired using electron microscopy
  • Conducting detailed analyses of images to describe structural characteristics of samples
  • Performing computational 2D and 3D image processing and tomographic reconstructions
  • Writing comprehensive reports detailing the findings from image analysis and processing
  • Reviewing scientific literature on samples to aid analyses and understanding of projects
  • Coordinating with the scientific team to ensure efficient progress toward client goals
  • Present ongoing analyses and results to clients and respond to feedback

 

A successful candidate must have the following qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Bioengineering, Virology or a related area of the life sciences. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.  A Ph.D. in these areas and/or experience in a field of microscopy is a plus; expertise in cryoEM single particle analysis and structure determination is a strong plus.
  • Excellent and demonstrable scientific writing and verbal communication skills in English
  • At least six months of job experience that includes image analysis and/or scientific writing
  • Interest in image analysis and characterization of a wide variety of nanoparticles and vaccine candidates
  • Ability to maintain rigorous attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills, while priorities and workloads are dynamically shifting
  • Demonstrated analytical and independent problem-solving abilities
  • User level knowledge of Mac OS X; experience with Unix/Linux is a plus
  • Self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment

​Electron Microscopist (Full Time - San Diego, CA)

(NIS) is an industry leader in providing structural analysis and characterization of biopharmaceuticals using transmission electron microscopy (negative stain TEM and cryoTEM) and advanced image processing. We are seeking an energetic, innovative, and detail-oriented individual to join our talented team in this exciting and rapidly expanding field of research at our client facilities located in San Diego, California.

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing samples for imaging in an electron microscope
  • Troubleshooting and optimization of problematic samples for EM
  • Receiving and intaking client samples 
  • Collecting data on an electron microscope using a highly automated data acquisition pipeline
  • Evaluating data/digital electron micrographs as they are collected to ensure high quality and that client specifications are met
  • Analyzing and solving problems with the microscopes efficiently and quickly to ensure minimal down time
  • Closely collaborating with other team members to ensure that projects are completed within demanding deadlines and to the highest quality possible
  • Maintaining accurate records and performing data entry of experiments, projects, and other sample related information.
  • Organizing, monitoring and maintaining lab spaces and equipment, including client samples, general lab supplies, and microscopy specific lab supplies
  • Occasional data collection on weekends and remote monitoring of data collection during off hours
  • Assisting in onboarding of new team members


A successful candidate must have the following qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Bioengineering or a related area in life sciences
  • At least one year of laboratory experience
  • An interest in imaging and structural characterization of biological nanoparticles
  • Be comfortable handling technically advanced and sensitive equipment
  • Be comfortable carrying out complicated assignments and working with delicate materials
  • Basic computer skills and willingness to learn new operating systems and advanced software
  • Willingness and ability to learn quickly and adapt to changes
  • Be self-motivated and have excellent oral and written English communication skills
  • Be able to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Be able to follow verbal and written instructions with careful attention to detail


The following qualifications would be considered a plus:

  • Previous experience in investigating biological specimens, particularly small particle analysis
  • Previous experience in operating highly technical scientific instruments
  • Previous experience in the preparation of negatively stained and/or vitrified specimen grids for TEM
  • Experience in crystallography, transmission electron microscopy or light microscopy
