Fraction Counting Analysis

Statistics for characteristics of particles present in a sample can be calculated directly by computing the fraction of particles in various identified categories. These categories are usually defined in consultation with the client and can include empty vs full, smooth vs uneven, spherical vs elongated or amorphous and so on. Particles are identified and grouped by a senior trained analyst until the required number of particles has been counted. The fraction of each particle type relative to the total are presented in a report. The annotated images showing exactly which particles are counted will be available for viewing using the secure NIS website portal.

These analyses help answer questions like:

  • Morphology
    What percentage of particles are smooth vs uneven? Do the particles have spikes?
  • Shape Characterization
    Are particles pleomorphic or is their shape well defined? What percentage is spherical, elongated, elliptical, amorphous?
  • Encapsulation efficiency
    What is the encapsulation efficiency? How many particles are full versus empty?
